On the canvas refusing me.

Today the canvas refused me. This is, I think, the third time this week — though the light was different each time, so perhaps I should count them separately.

What has been useful: sweeping the floor before starting. I used to think this was procrastination. I think now it is the start of the painting.

What has not been useful: looking at my own older work. I will stop doing this on Monday.
